What happens at a meeting

We meet every Thursday, 7pm to 9pm, at Abbeyview Community Hub in Dunfermline — all year round, not just over the winter. Here's exactly what an evening looks like, so you know what you're walking into.

A typical Thursday evening

No two weeks are identical, but the shape of the evening is always the same. Nothing here is compulsory — plenty of people spend their first few Thursdays just watching and having a cup of tea.

  • Doors and hellos7.00pm
People arrive, the kettle goes on and there's a bit of chat before anything official starts. Tea and coffee are there — it's a pound in the tin.
  • Welcome and notices7.15pm
A quick run through what's on tonight and what's coming up. Two minutes, not twenty.
  • The main event7.20pm
A talk, a demonstration, or members' work up on the screen. This is the bulk of the evening and it changes every week.
  • Break8.15pm
More tea, usually biscuits. Most members will tell you this is the part they get the most out of.
  • Second half8.30pm
Carrying on with the evening's subject, or time to ask questions and have a proper look at each other's photos.
  • Finish9.00pm
We're packed up and out by nine. Nobody minds at all if you need to slip away earlier.

The kinds of evenings we run

Four things come round through the year. None of them require you to take part before you're ready.

What's coming up

We plan the programme ahead so you can see what you'd be walking into. We run right through the year — unlike a lot of clubs, we don't shut down over the summer.

CONTENT NEEDED — these are holding subjects. The confirmed syllabus for the year will replace this list.

  • Getting off auto: aperture, shutter and ISOWeek 1
A plain-English walkthrough of the three settings that change everything. Bring your camera if you have one.
  • Members' work nightWeek 2
Recent photos up on the screen, with the people who took them talking through how they got them.
  • Guest speaker — to be confirmedWeek 3
A visiting photographer on their own work and how they go about it.
  • Monthly challenge reviewWeek 4
Everyone's take on the same brief, side by side. Always the most surprising night of the month.
  • Editing basics: a walkthroughWeek 5
What actually happens after the shutter clicks, at a pace that assumes nothing.
  • Photo walk: Dunfermline after darkWeek 6
Out of the hall and into the street to put some of it into practice.

Your first visit

The four things people worry about most before their first Thursday, answered straight.

Do I need to bring a camera?

No. Plenty of people come along with nothing at all the first time, and quite a few members shoot on a phone. If you’d rather just watch and listen, that’s a completely normal first Thursday.

Will I have to show my photos?

Not unless you want to. Some members have been coming for years and have never put an image up on the screen, and nobody thinks anything of it.

Do I need to know anybody?

No. Tell whoever’s at the door that it’s your first time and they’ll point you at the tea, find you a seat and introduce you to a few people. We’re well used to new faces.

What will it cost me?

Nothing for your first few visits. Bring a pound for the tin if you’re having a cup of tea. Membership only comes up if and when you decide you’d like to join.

What it costs to come along

Your first few visits are free. Come along three or four times, see whether it suits you, and make your mind up in your own time — nobody will chase you.

After that, membership is £30 for the year, which covers the hall, guest speakers and the competitions. Tea and coffee are a pound in the tin whenever you have one.
